Aguilar takes over helm at EGHS

In January, when head coach Joe Glass stepped down from his head coaching position at Eastern, the Wildcats were forced to hire their third coach in the past three seasons. In March, EGHS found their new coach when they hired Tony Aguilar from Eastern Alamance High School.

Glass, who spent one season with the Wildcats, accepted the head coach position at Lincolnton County School earlier this year. Aguilar comes from EAHS where he spent the past 20 seasons on the football staff.

“The timing was really good,” said Aguilar. My daughter said it was okay for me to leave and so did my wife. I felt like when coach “Rob” [Robertson] came in he really did a great job and Coach Glass done a great job too. This school is heading in the right direction and I hope to take it up a notch.”

Coach Aguilar graduated from Hobart college (N.Y.) in 1997 where he was an all American in football and lacrosse. Aguilar was a long-time assistant coach at EAHS and this will be his first head coaching job. He was also the varsity men’s lacrosse and golf coach at EAHS. In 2018, Aguilar helped lead the eagles to a 10-4 record and lost in the 3rd round of the playoffs.

When asked about the difference in coaching responsibilities, Aguilar said. “There’s a lot of paper work and the wins or losses are on me.”

He added a simple one-word answer for the difference in EAHS and EGHS “diversity.”

Eastern Guilford is currently 2-1. They lost to Grimsley and won against Northeast Guilford and Trinity and they played Page Friday night.
