Wildcats grapplers off to 8-1 start

Paw Print Staff Report

Last Tuesday night the Eastern Guilford wrestling team suffered its first loss of the season to 4-A state-ranked Glenn, 40-31. One day later, the Wildcats swept a 4-dual meet match at Western Guilford. With their 4-1 week, Eastern Guilford improved to 8-1 on the season under first-year head coach Maurice Atwood.

At Western Guilford, Eastern Guilford defeated East Forsyth, 54-30; Grimsley, 66-10; McMichael, 60-24 and Western Guilford, 39-38.

Those winning matches at the quad-meet were: Jeremiah Chapman, Devin Ellis, Keijuan Smith, Payton Jensen, Chase Buchanan, Nasir Grant, Malachi Hamilton, Marcus Bynum, Phai B Krong, Lucas Stanley, Laye Conneh, Ryan Barnes, Isaiah Manning, Perry Sharpe, Elijah Dawkins, Khasai Roane, Karin Sein, Jacob Vickers and Maurice Williams.

“After last week’s competition the current win-loss record for the wrestling wildcats is 8-1 and that isn’t a bad start for a group as young and inexperienced as we currently have comprising the team,” said coach Atwood. “The work were putting in now, and in the months to come, is designed to completely change the narrative regarding the prospects on the season for wrestling program. My intent as a coach is to build a state-champion caliber team that will consistently compete for state titles year in and year out. We are a long way from being in a position to do that, but we are in the midst of establishing that mindset expectations.”

Earning victories for EGHS in the loss to Glenn were: Keijuan Smith, Lucas Stanley, Phai B Krong, Ryan Barnes, Isaiah Manning, Joseph Vickers, Justin Patterson and Paul Thorne.

On Saturday, Eastern will travel to Green Hope High School for the Green Hope Grapple Invitational.
